Make it Easy to be Consistent
I've been a little under the weather this week, but training continues anyway.
Times like this (which are unavoidable from time to time) I simply auto-regulate by dropping the intensity or volume when I'm not firing on all cylinders.
(Obviously, being really/legitimately sick is different then being under the weather. If you're really sick, take the day off and rest. Maybe get out for a walk or hop in a hot tub or sauna if you're able. What's really sick? I don't know – fever, nausea, chills. Stuff like that. If you're just a little more fatigued than usual, or dealing with sinuses or allergies, you can still train).
Consistency is a principle I live by in all areas of life.
I'm able to keep training consistency and adherence high because I keep my programming simple (and I maintain a personal standard, which may or may not be more harsh on oneself then recommended lol).
Create simple, repeatable fitness systems and have contingencies for when you're strapped for time, somewhat under the weather, or even just under a lot of pressure in other areas of life. But do not skip training. It's better to adjust and do a shorter OR easier (less intense — staying further away from failure on your sets) training session then to skip.
Plus, every session you complete further instills the habit of training.
On the flip side, every session that gets skipped, or pushed off to another day (tisk tisk) instills the habit of deprioritizing your health. No good!
Health is wealth and we all need to prioritize it, one way or another, regardless of how serious or casual our fitness goals may be.
Health and fitness are – after all – a personal responsibility to ourselves and to those around us.
Don't become a liability.
Train anyway.
