I'm not kidding. This one, simple tricep exercise is so effective and so fun that my in-person clients unanimously finish each set grabbing the back of their arms, looking me in the eyes so I can see the water that's forming in their own eyes, and grace me with a string of aggressive 4 letter words.
I love it.
I, of course, respond the way any personal trainer does in such a situation.
By throwing my head back and wailing in laughter. Once I regain my composure, I inform them that we're going to do 1 or 2 more sets.
To their credit, I react the exact same way when I do the exercise, as well.
The exercise in question?
Cable overhead extensions.
I do this exercise the same way many people do. But, in case there's any confusion, here's my big points:
1. Set the cable high – somewhere above your own eye level or head.
2. Grab a long rope or a long strap (if using a strap, I wad up my hands into fists and loop the strap around it).
3. Lean forward so the chest is close to parallel with the floor.
4. Focus on a big stretch by getting the hands close to the shoulders at the back of the movement.
5. Drive the hands forward AND out to the sides.
It's not the only great tricep exercise, but it is one of the more delightful variations I regularly use and it's super effective.
Give it a shot.
